    March 2009 meeting

    MYDDFAI WI

    The meeting on 4th March was held at the home

    of Secretary Nesta Davies, before going on to

    the Red Lion, Llangadog, for a cawl supper.The

    meeting began with the distribution to members

    of the programme for 2009. A letter had been

    received from Keith Brown, of Cilgwyn Lodge,

    requesting that we would again do the teas at his

    Open Garden Day on Sunday 19th July. This

    year will be the 10th anniversary of opening the

    garden for the National Garden Scheme. An

    extra attraction is planned, a stall selling

    Myddfai crafts and other items made locally.

    Four members had taken part in an evening

    of dominoes at the White Hart, Llandeilo, and

    had enjoyed a jolly time, as usual.

    The Brianne Spring Group Meeting will be

    held on Friday, 20th March, in Llangadog. The

    guest speaker will be David Walters, Chief

    Executive of the Royal Welsh Show.

    A discussion followed on the entries for the

    ‘Show within a Show’ on Saturday 27th June at

    the National Botanic Gardens. Some members

    offered to enter items for some of the categories.

    Next on the agenda was deciding on the

    venue and date for the annual May outing. The

    final choice was the Cathedral city of Wells in

    Somerset, and the possible date 14th May. We

    very much hope to welcome anyone who would

    like to join us that day, so that we can fill the

    places on the coach.

    Two members hope to go on the Carmarthen

    town ramble on Wednesday 22nd April, and

    several plan to attend the spring council meeting

    on Monday 27th April at St Peter’s Civic Hall.

    Carmarthenshire, when the speaker will be Peter

    Shaw talking on his experience of being

    kidnapped in Georgia in 2002. The next meeting

    will be on 2nd April, when the speaker will be

    Richard Keen.

    WI JANUARY 2009

    The first meeting of the New Year was held on Tuesday 13th January, having been postponed because of the icy conditions on the road. The vice president, Barbara Thomas, took the chair and nine members were present. Apologies had been received from five members.

    A report was given by one of the members who had attended the Christmas Fayre in Trimsaran, which had been much enjoyed. Members were thanked for their help with the cake stall at the Myddfai Christmas Fair, with the money raised going towards the new village hall fund.

    At least one team will be participating in the annual quiz at the Halfway, Nantgaredig, on Tuesday 27th January, and several members are planning to play dominoes on Monday 23 February at the White Hart, Llandeilo. The Creative Day on 21 February has attracted one or two people, and at least two members will attend the WI Officers meeting at the White Hart on Wednesday, 25th February.

    The beginning of a new year means that the WI subscriptions are due. 200 club: six bonds are to be purchased.

    A suggestion was put forward that a visit might be made to a production at Theatre Elli to celebrate St. David’s Day, instead of the usual cawl at a local pub.

    The programme for the coming year is in process of preparation and ideas were asked for names of speakers for meetings.

    Members were reminded of the celebration in the village hall of St. Dynwen’s Day on Saturday, 24th January. Everyone is requested to take a plate of food to share.

    The meeting ended with games of whist and dominoes to introduce these to members who had not played before.

    The next meeting will be on Thursday, 5th February. Anyone wishing to join us would be very welcome. The meeting will be in the village hall and starts at 7pm.

    November 2008

    The Brianne Group Autumn meeting was held in Myddfai Hall on 24th October, The President, Jackie Freemantle, welcomed members and guests, and advisor, Pat Thomas. She outlined events that had taken place and others to come, Friday 14th November was the date for the Myddfai WI Whist Drive, followed by the Christmas Fair on Saturday 29th November. She congratulated Valerie Wood-Gaiger for being one of the two winners chosen as W-Icons. Her prize of £10,000 will be going towards “Learning with Grandma”. Congratulations, too, to Sandra Simkins of Gwynfe WI for her appearance on BBC1 “The Weakest Link”.

    Gwen Evans, President of Llangadog WI, invited everyone to the Spring Group meeting, 2009.

    Win Morgan, the speaker, was introduced, and she gave a most interesting insight into the difficulties in maintaining Llangadog Post Office, She and her husband, Richard, had introduced so many things, including llangadog’s website, computer lessons, computer photography courses, KITE, Supper in the Square and local Neighbourhood policing, to name only a few. The meeting ended with members of Myddfai WI reading poems and amusing articles.

    Two members attended the Brianne Group Committee meeting in Pumpsaint Community Hall on 3 November, when they presented the accounts for the Group Meeting.

    A cheque for the profit had been sent to SGCF. Myddfai were congratulated on a successful evening, with an excellent speaker and delicious buffet.

    Suggestions for a speaker for the Spring Group Meeting in Llangaog were put forward.

    The WI monthly meeting was taken by Vice president, barbara thomas, in the absence of the President Carroll Nunnerly. Apologies had been received from the President and Secretary.

    The minutes of the last meeting were read and the monthly letter discussed. Glenys Evans, who had been Traesurer for two years, had reluctantly resigned owing to ill health. She was thanked for looking after the accounts so well. Election of officers for 2008 followed. There were only two changes. Su Davies is to be the new Treasurer and Fiona Walker will become Sick Visitor.

    Arrangements for the Whist Drive on Friday, 14th November, were discussed. Mrs Eirlys Rowlands had been booked as MC. Members were asked to bring raffle items and cakes. Entry will be £1.50

    The Christmas dinner will take place at the Goose and Cuckoo, llangadog, on Wednesday, 10th December, at 7.00pm for 7.30 pm. The menu was circulated and choices made. The Vice President then read a letter from Judith McSwiney requesting people to provide items for the Christmas Fayre; mince pies, cakes, books, raffle prizes and things for the tombola stall.

    The meeting ended with the annual reports from the Secretary and President, read by Barbara Thomas and the Treasurer, Glenys Evans, gave her (last) report.

    Two members attended the AGM in Bronwydd Hall on Saturday, 8th November. The meeting was chaired by Jill Price and reports were given by the County Secretary and Committee members. Then followed the first speaker, Carys Jones, who gave a fascinating account of her life and work, and brought examples of her handicrafts to display.

    In the afternoon, Sarah Edwards, also spoke of her many and various activities and her talk was much enjoyed.

    The day ended with the singing of the National Anthems.
